Have you ever been immersed in a Christian fiction story that it’s hard to put down? I have, and this list of 10 not-to-miss female Christian fiction authors includes many of them. Take a look. You’ll be glad you did!

Female Christian Fiction Authors

Reading’s personal. We all have our opinions and preferences. Some might like suspense while others spend hours deep in Christian Romance, Biblical fiction, or Christian nonfiction. All have fantastically talented authors, their gifts given by God and their craft honed by the one holding the pen. Some are women. Many, in fact. This post will focus on female Christian fiction authors.

This list will lean more toward romance because, well, that’s my favorite. (Contemporary, preferably.) But all of these authors pen a fantastic read, so check them out. Be sure to keep reading, though, because I’ll add a list of their best Christian Fiction Books below as well.

Who Is the Most Famous Female Author?

Talk about subjective. This one’s it. Famous in whose eyes? Society? Book sellers? Grandchildren? See? It’s subjective. If we study our list, noting how widely read and sold their books are, the movies that have spawned from these manuscripts, and more, we’ll whittle it down to two female authors. Ready? Let’s go!

  • Karen Kingsbury
Karen’s credited with a long list of novels–like a REALLY long list of best sellers. (God used one of her novels to reintroduce me to fiction reading after a fifteen-year hiatus, and I’m forever thankful to the Lord and this woman.) She affectionately calls her books “little missionaries.” Evangelism in story form! Look for an upcoming television series based on the Baxter Family Series, too, with Roma Downey and others. It’s bound to be good!
  • Francine Rivers
Francine’s salvation caused a switch from secular romance novels to Christian fiction. What a win for the Christian fiction reading community! Redeeming Love, her most widely known novel, is being made into a movie. Keep watch for it in 2021. There’s also a devotional and Bible study based on the book as well.

Who Are the Best Christian Fiction Writers?

So let’s get to our list of 10 not-to-miss Christian female writers, shall we? This compilation is based on my own experience and enjoyment reading these novelists’ work. It’s in no specific order. Rest assured, there’ll be another list or two like this one because there are so many talented writers spinning fantastic, clean, faith-based stories.

  1. Karen Kingsbury
Karen writes contemporary fiction primarily. Her Baxter Series crowds its own ancestral tree. (Really! Check out the front inside pages for the tree that’s now several generations deep.)
  2. Francine Rivers
Francine writes contemporary and historical. She brings biblical names to life, romances and relationships, too.
  3. Becky Wade
Becky writes contemporary Christian romance that is pure joy to read. Her more recent novel, Stay with Me (see my review here), hunkers in on a real-life issue that isn’t always discussed in Christian circles. Thoroughly enjoyable. (By the way, she has an upcoming release called Let It Be Me.)
  4. Denise Hunter
Denise is another favorite contemporary romance author. She has several Hallmark movies, based on her novels, too.
  5. Rachel Hauck
Rachel writes romance. Her stories often straddle time periods and are a delight to read. Hallmark produced a movie based on one of her novels as well.
  6. Susan May Warren
Susan’s repertoire of novels includes romance and action. Her heroes and heroines are no wimps.
  7. Lisa Wingate
Lisa’s Before We Were Yours straddles time, from one generation to another and back, throughout the book. We listened on audio, and it captured the attention of my husband, our sixteen-year-old son, and me. Quite a feat!
  8. Deborah Raney
Deborah writes stories geared toward either historical or women’s fiction. The best part? They’re clean and sweet.
  9. Janette Oke
If you’ve heard of When Calls the Heart, then you know of Janette Oke. The series is based on her novel. She writes incredibly sweet, historical fiction.
  10. Tessa Afshar
Tessa writes Biblical fiction. This woman has a story–or several–to tell. She’s a faith inspiration in real life as well as on the pages of many novels.
