WORD17, Week 16

Welcome to WORD17!

Our memory verse this month is Matthew 7:7.

There are three verbs. We talked about that a couple of Mondays ago here.

All are separate, or are they?

Digging into BlueLetterBible.org, we find a daisy-chain connection between all three verbs and our faith. Here’s what the Matthew Henry Commentary on BlueLetterBible.org offers:
“Ask; represent your wants and burthens to God, and refer yourselves to him for support and supply, according to his promise.

Seek, as for a thing of value that we have lost, or as the merchantman that seeks goodly pearls. Seek by prayer, Dan. 9:3.

Knock, as he that desires to enter into the house knocks at the door.’ We would be admitted to converse with God, would be taken into his love, and favour, and kingdom; sin has shut and barred the door against us; by prayer, we knock; Lord, Lord, open to us. Christ knocks at our door (Rev. 3:20; Cant. 5:2); and allows us to knock at his, which is a favour we do not allow to common beggars. Seeking and knocking imply something more than asking and praying.”¹

Do you see it?

Ask – go to Him for all our support, for everything we need.

Seek – diligently, as though we’ve lost a treasure.

Knock – as though we desire and have hope-filled expectations to enter, to talk with God.

And all of this is wrapped in a neat virtual bow of understanding that God is God and man is man. He is God, the master who made the universe and we are a creation of His hand. We go to Him, setting aside our will, and seeking diligently His, trusting our God knows best.

And the door opens wide.

Action Step:

In what area is God wooing you to ask, seek, and knock? In what area do you sense a struggle? Consider offering it to Him now.

  1. Kristi … thanks for helping us see the link between these words. One leads to the other and back and forth again.

Our faith walk in black and white.

Blessings to you today, friend …
