Feeling Sad or Lonely?

Looking for the words to pray when sadness hits–that time when life feels dark and maybe things look bleak?

Perhaps, we can’t seem to pull ourselves out of that blasted pit. Loneliness adds to it or maybe even propels us there. We’re not alone. God sees and hears. We can pray this prayer when sad.

Scripture for Sadness?

Is there a scripture for sadness? Believe it or not, there are several.

Sadness threads its way through the lives of people of the Bible. We read about them in Job 3, Psalm 143:7-8, and other verses. We see the web of sadness in people’s lives still today. Maybe even in ourselves from time to time.

There’s a scripture for sadness, several, in fact, that help us unfold hope. Here are a few Bible verses shedding light on those heavy feelings.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

(PS 34:18 NIV)

A Prayer for Strength

Grab and use this prayer for strength.

Father, You are my strength and shield. Apart from You, I can do nothing. So I look to You, my true Strength. Build my spiritual muscles. May I be strong in You, Lord, and in Your mighty power. Remind me, prompt me, lead me. All praise to Your name, Jesus, amen.

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.”

(Eph. 6:10 NIV)

Combating Sadness with Gratitude

Whenever I hit low points, I ensure my focus includes gratitude. (Because often, it has slipped.)

Science indicates real change in our brains when we focus on gratitude. God must know it does the heart good, too, because He mentions it either directly or indirectly in several Bible verses, including 1 Thes. 5:18 and Psalm 136:1.

Prayer for Inner Peace and Calm

We value peace here at KristiWoods.net. Take this prayer for inner peace and calm and carry it with you like a prescription: daily or as needed.

Father,
You are my peace, my comfort, my shield. I praise You. You keep me in perfect peace because my mind is steadfast. Inner calm remains when I trust in You. So I do. I place my trust in You, Almighty. There are tremors in life right now, causing peace and calm to quiver, but I will trust in You. I desire Your peace–for my sake and Your praise. So I sprint to You, faithful Father. Deepen my trust. Cause my stride to be even more steadfast as I run this race, especially when trouble comes. Coat me with Your peace. Steady my heart. Wrap my mind with a calm no man can manufacture. Thank You, Prince of Peace. All praise to You, King of kings. Amen.

“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”

(IS 26:3 NIV)

A Prayer for When You’re Sad and Lonely

Let’s wrap up this post, “Pray this prayer when you’re sad” with the following. It’s a prayer for when you’re sad and lonely, based on Psalms.

God, You are my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer. (PS 18:2) I take refuge in and give You praise. Shield me from these heavy feelings, from sadness and despair. Take off the enemy’s cloak and weight. Forgive me for clinging to them, replace them with hope. When I feel alone, remind me You are near. For I believe You are. When I look outside or at others, cause me to see Your beautiful handiwork. Because it is good, and so are You. I am not forsaken. I’m not left alone. You are with me to the end of the age. For that, I’m grateful. And Lord, I’d love a friend along for the journey, but only what is Your good and perfect will. Praise You. Thank You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

I hope you pray this prayer when sad, or others that speak straight to your heart and to the ears of God. He cares. Hang in there, friend. Cling tightly. You won’t be sorry.

  1. I’m just about nose level with sadness. My family is going through a lot and this is something that we have never been through. I appreciate Any and all words of hope and all prayers that can come my way.

    1. Sandy, it sounds like you’re going through a major trial. I’m so sorry–it’s the pits when you’re in the middle of it. Our family faced an awful 18 mos. a short time ago. During that time, I dug into the Bible book of John and picked out all the places where Jesus (or others) describes himself. Whether it’s John, Psalms, Colossians, or elsewhere in the Bible, please cling to His promises and WHO He assures us He is.
Father, thank you for Sandy–for making her in your likeness and image. Pour our your wisdom, lead her with your strength. Help her to have eyes that see beyond this trial and to the hope you offer. May no weapon formed against her prosper, Holy One, and may she be strong in you and in your mighty power. In Jesus’ name, amen.
(Sandy, it’s easy to list those descriptions on paper, or, I have a Bible Journal + More on my shop page that will help as well.) Stand strong in the Lord, friend.
