Bible and praying hands with overlay of Christian blog post title: 5 Powerful Bible Verses about Prayer

Have you ever considered how powerful Bible verses about prayer are? Keep reading as we cover several prayer scriptures and five specific ones to study, memorize, and use when needed.

When my husband was half a world away with the military, the Holy Spirit nudged me to pray for him. Communication had been shut off due to a situation on his ship, so I hadn’t heard from my guy. But the Lord saw us both and knew our needs.

Turns out, my husband was tasked with scouring work computers for “questionable” photographs and emails as part of an onboard investigation. I knew nothing of it, but God did. With my hubby several time zones away, the Holy Spirit nudged me to pray for my husband’s protection. How grateful I am that the Lord took care of Tony amid that difficulty.

How Bible Verses on Prayer Vary

Some Scripture prayers rush to the scene like a fire truck ready to douse a situation, others mirror examples or provide instruction, and yet other Scriptures on prayer beat like a muscle on a mission. They overflow with power and action, offering a hint of what a faith alive looks like.

Goodness.

We’re wise to pay attention, soak in every morsel, situate our trust in the God to whom we pray, and put the scriptural directives into action.

Importance of Prayer in the Bible

There’s a steadfast importance of prayer in the Bible. Jesus retreated often to pray. In fact, his last words on the cross, according to the book of Luke, were communication with our Father.

“Jesus called out with a loud voice, ‘Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.’ When he had said this, he breathed his last.”

(Luke 23:46 NIV)

We’re prompted through Scripture to pray continually. (That’s in 1 Thess. 5:17.) We see over and over, through men like Daniel and women like Mary, the power of placing our trust in God through prayer.

Believing in the Power of Prayer

What about when we have a hard time believing in the power of prayer? Let’s cover a few common battles concerning belief.

Discouragement

When discouragement or loss rock our boat, or prayers seemingly remain unanswered and hanging out to dry somewhere in the atmosphere, some of us may have difficulty believing prayer matters.

Check out Job. God hears. He sees. And goodness, in the last chapters, we read about His astounding might, wisdom, and omnipotence. Trust in Him isn’t denied.

God Answers Others, But Not Me

Maybe we believe there’s power in prayer, but it’s for everyone else but us. “Their” prayers get answered. Ours don’t.

Our Father so loved the world, that Jesus died for all. Sometimes, our own expectations rally belief and squash it. Other times, there’s no explanation this side of heaven–not with man, at least. However, if we hang our expectations on God’s hook, dwelling on who He is, praise, magnification of our God, thanksgiving, and love, being willing to lean heavily on not my will but thine, think of how things could go.

Prayer’s a Battlefield

It’s no surprise there’s enemy push-back concerning communication with our Father. Within the threads of prayer come strength, healing, testimonies, and praise to God.

Our enemy, the devil, roams this earth. He kills, steals, and destroys however and whenever he can in order to discredit God and His plans. And if using the vehicle of doubt about being heard or our questionable power in the words we offer, so be it.

Don’t let the enemy chip away at faith through doubt in prayer. God hears our prayers. He calls us to communicate with Him and urges us to spend time with Him. That’s a hope-filled privilege.

An Action Step for Praying

We have the opportunity to press past the battle by believing in the power of prayer. That’s it. 100%. And If questions about this linger or rise in the future? Follow Jesus through the Gospels and see what happens when He prays. Or, follow the disciples after Jesus ascends to Heaven.

Famous Prayers in the Bible

Several prominent prayers include Jesus’ prayer at the Mount of Olives, those of Daniel, Mary’s, and many more. While we can easily focus on several, let’s whittle it down to three famous prayers in the Bible that we can put to use in our own prayer life right now.

The Lord’s Prayer PDF

Growing up as a member of a large denomination, I recited The Lord’s Prayer regularly. Its repetition in congregations today seems to have lessened, but its power remains. Forgiveness, honor, spiritual alertness, and God’s plan are included–all good for the heart and as a reminder, too. It’s a good one to offer regularly and to teach to our children and grandkids.

The Lord’s prayer is surely one of the most well-known or most famous prayers in the Bible.

Hannah’s Prayer

Hannah’s a woman stung by infertility, yet the fire of prayer in her never darkened. She continued to petition the Lord and eventually birthed a son, Samuel. After offering Him to the Lord, she worshiped the Almighty through this beautiful prayer.

Paul’s Prayer

Paul’s prayer in Ephesians remains relevant yet today. Consider if our mentors or family members thanked God for us, never stopping with the overflow of thanksgiving as Paul mentioned in Ephesians. I have not stopped giving thanks for you is a beautiful declaration and powerful prayer.

What is a Popular Bible Verse About Prayer

Phil. 4:6 is one I used over and over during an anxiety-riddled PCS (moving) season. I scribbled that truth on an index card and repeated it each time I looked in the mirror. I repeated it whenever worry tempted by intentionally refusing the worry, marching into the bathroom where the card was taped, asking God to forgive me, then proclaiming the truth in prayer.

It went something like this: “I will not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition and with thanksgiving, I will present my requests to You, God.”

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

(Phil. 4:6 NIV)

God answered that prayer. It wasn’t seamless, but my hope hinged on Him, not my own power. And that changes things.
